How Do I Get My Business Mentioned by ChatGPT?
AI Search Visibility
There is no public form that submits a business for an organic ChatGPT recommendation.
The practical path is to improve the evidence ChatGPT can retrieve and use: make the business and its services clear, answer the buyer’s specific questions, earn accurate third-party references, keep important facts consistent, allow the relevant search crawler to access the pages, and publish original material worth citing. Then test the result with unbranded buyer questions.
First, measure the real question
Do not start by asking ChatGPT, “What do you know about my company?”
That is a brand-awareness test. It does not show what a prospect sees before knowing your name.
Start with unbranded questions such as:
- Which companies offer [service] for [audience]?
- What is the best [provider] for [specific use case]?
- Which [providers] should I compare in [location]?
- Who helps businesses solve [problem]?
- Which companies are known for [proof point]?
Record the companies named and the sources cited. If no business is named, record that too. You cannot diagnose a recommendation gap from a prompt that never produces recommendations.
1. Make sure ChatGPT search can access the right pages
OpenAI uses OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search. Its crawler documentation says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, although they may still appear as navigational links.
A simple allow rule is:
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
Do not paste this blindly. Review whether your site intentionally blocks certain paths, and confirm that your CDN, firewall, bot protection, CAPTCHA, or hosting rules are not returning errors to legitimate crawler traffic.
OpenAI also distinguishes OAI-SearchBot from GPTBot. OAI-SearchBot controls search eligibility. GPTBot relates to potential model training. A publisher can allow search while disallowing training.
Crawler access is an eligibility step. It is not a recommendation switch.
2. Create pages that answer high-intent questions directly
ChatGPT needs a source that fits the question.
A generic service page that says, “We deliver innovative solutions for businesses of all sizes,” gives the engine almost nothing specific to use.
A useful page might answer:
- who the service is for;
- what problem it solves;
- what is included;
- which systems or locations it supports;
- how pricing works;
- what the process looks like;
- what proof exists; and
- when the offer is not a good fit.
Lead with a direct answer, then support it. Do not confuse clarity with writing tiny robotic fragments. The page should still help a human make a decision.
3. Clarify the business entity
The website should consistently identify:
- legal or public business name;
- brand name and common variations;
- services and product categories;
- locations and service areas;
- founders or qualified experts;
- contact information;
- relevant credentials;
- customer type; and
- relationships among the organization, products, and people.
Use accurate Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, Service, Person, Article, or other appropriate structured data when the visible page supports it.
Schema helps describe information. It does not guarantee that ChatGPT will name the business.
4. Keep important facts consistent
Conflicting facts make the evidence harder to trust.
Review your website, business profiles, directories, social pages, partner listings, review profiles, and major third-party references for inconsistent:
- names;
- addresses;
- phone numbers;
- hours;
- pricing;
- product details;
- executive information;
- service descriptions; and
- current availability.
Consistency does not mean copying the same marketing paragraph everywhere. It means the underlying facts agree.
5. Strengthen third-party corroboration
Your website is the best source for facts you control. It is not automatically the most persuasive source for claims about reputation or quality.
Useful outside corroboration can include:
- detailed customer reviews;
- association or partner pages;
- credible comparison articles;
- expert commentary;
- media coverage;
- podcast or event appearances;
- awards with a real selection method;
- independent case studies; and
- industry datasets.
Do not replace credibility with distribution volume. A press release copied to dozens of thin sites is not the same as meaningful coverage.
6. Publish original evidence worth citing
The internet does not need another article that restates ten tips everyone already knows.
Publish information that exists because your business did the work:
- a benchmark from customer data;
- a recurring industry index;
- a calculator;
- a transparent comparison;
- a before-and-after case study;
- documented pricing research;
- a teardown based on real examples;
- a field test; or
- expert analysis grounded in years of practice.
Include the method, sample, date, and limitations. A number becomes quotable when the reader can tell what it measures.
7. Retest across repeated runs
One answer is not a permanent rank.
For each priority prompt, record:
- date and time;
- product and model surface;
- location and language;
- whether search and citations appeared;
- businesses named;
- domains and URLs cited;
- your named-and-cited status; and
- the result across repeated runs.
A 2026 study of three generative search platforms found substantial citation variation across repeated samples. The same query can return a different source set. Treat visibility as a measured distribution, not a trophy screenshot.
Seven steps toward a ChatGPT mention
There is no organic submission form. Build a clearer, retrievable, corroborated business.
- 1Test buyer questions
- 2Allow OAI-SearchBot
- 3Build intent pages
- 4Clarify the entity
- 5Align business facts
- 6Earn corroboration
- 7Repeat the test
Crawler access creates eligibility. Evidence and relevance create a reason to appear.

What not to do
Do not buy a guaranteed citation
No agency controls ChatGPT’s organic recommendations. A guarantee is a sales claim, not platform access.
Do not treat llms.txt as a universal requirement
Google explicitly says it does not use llms.txt for Google Search. OpenAI’s current publisher guidance focuses on OAI-SearchBot access, not an llms.txt requirement. Maintain the file only when a specific system or workflow has a documented use for it.
Do not add schema and stop
Structured data can clarify a page. It cannot create missing expertise, evidence, authority, or customer value.
Do not repeat the brand name unnaturally
Repetition is not corroboration. Write for the buyer and make the entity clear through accurate facts and context.
Do not publish dozens of near-duplicate pages
Google warns against scaled content created primarily to manipulate rankings or generative responses. More pages do not automatically create better evidence.
Do not rely on one press release network
Earned authority comes from credible sources and useful information, not the number of URLs that repeat the same announcement.
A practical 30-day starting plan
Week 1: Establish the baseline
- Choose 15 to 25 priority buyer questions.
- Test them across the engines that matter.
- Record names and citations separately.
- Identify the competitors and outside domains that repeat.
Week 2: Fix access and entity clarity
- Review OAI-SearchBot access.
- Check indexation and rendering.
- Correct inconsistent business facts.
- Strengthen organization, author, service, and location information.
Week 3: Close one content gap
- Select the highest-intent question with weak coverage.
- Publish or improve the page that should answer it.
- Add specific proof, examples, policies, and direct answers.
Week 4: Build one corroboration asset
- Publish a case study, benchmark, or original analysis.
- Pitch the finding to relevant outside sources.
- Retest after the content can reasonably be discovered.
Frequently asked questions
Can I submit my website to ChatGPT?
OpenAI does not publish a general business-submission form for organic recommendations. Public sites can appear in ChatGPT search, and OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot for search eligibility.
How long will it take?
There is no fixed timeline. Crawl discovery, indexing, content quality, outside corroboration, competition, and product behavior all matter. Measure milestones instead of buying a date promise.
Can ChatGPT mention a business without citing its website?
Yes. The business may be named while another source is cited, or no visible citation may appear.
Does blocking GPTBot block ChatGPT search?
OpenAI treats GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot as independent controls. A publisher can disallow GPTBot for potential training while allowing OAI-SearchBot for search.
Can I track traffic from ChatGPT?
OpenAI says ChatGPT search referral URLs include utm_source=chatgpt.com, which can be tracked in analytics. Traffic is only one metric because many users will not click.
